Oka is more than JUST FIGURE SKATING lessons

Oka Figure Skating is a private, professional academy built on high standards and certified instruction. Our coaching team is U.S. Figure Skating–compliant, fully credentialed, and we have proudly held Learn to Skate USA program credentials since 2020. We use this curriculum as the foundation of our instruction, providing skaters with a strong technical base and clear progression path. From there, we expand far beyond beginner levels by offering advanced training in jumps, spins, competition preparation, and U.S. Figure Skating testing for skaters who are ready to pursue higher-level goals. From the moment you join Oka, you’re welcomed into a supportive program that’s here to guide you, support you, and help you grow through every step of your figure skating journey.

Oka is more than JUST FIGURE SKATING lessons

For skaters who choose to compete, we select our season competition schedule prior to enrollment each year, along with tentative testing sessions when applicable. This helps families plan ahead and understand the opportunities available for the season.

Oka Figure Skating hosts a special annual Showcase Event, typically held toward the end of our main season in Williston, ND. This community event gives all program skaters—competitors and non-competitors alike—the opportunity to perform, celebrate their progress, and share their accomplishments with family, friends, and the community.

The Oka Figure Skating Program gave my daughter the confidence to get out on the ice and perform,  which is something she would have never been able to do before. We are so thankful for this program and for the amazing coaches who help make it great!

UNDERSTAND YOUR INVESTMENT

We know the commitment!

We know that enrolling in figure skating is a financial and time commitment. Our goal is to ensure you clearly understand the value you receive and why investing in skater development is worthwhile.

Additional Lessons & Classes

Along with their weekly lessons, athletes also have access to 'add-on' lessons and special classes for an additional investment.

Support for Testing & Competitions
Guidance, preparation, and coaching for skaters who want to challenge themselves

  • Beginner Level

For skaters lacing up for the first time we start with fundamentals. Balance, glides, basic edges. Everything is gentle, encouraging, and confidence-driven.

  • Intermediate Level

Once basics are comfortable, skaters begin layering in turns, jumps, footwork, artistry, and more challenging moves. This is where the fun of progress kicks in.

  • Advanced / Competitive Training

For skaters ready to push harder, we refine technique, prepare for tests/competitions, integrate off-ice conditioning, and build consistency. This tier is for those who want to reach beyond the rink.

Frequently Asked QuesTions

Your child will be paired with a coach based on their skill level and availability (our coaches are available different days). After completing the enrollment form, your proposal will list who your child is paired with. Please note, if you worked with a certain coach last season, we will prioritize your time with that coach unless requested otherwise.

Small group lessons are paired based on skill and age, which is gathered in the enrollment form. The goal for all groups is to have skaters very similar in skating skills. It is important to note that our limited ice time will likely require most skaters to share a lesson time.

We recommend starting with the Platinum Edge in Minot, ND for your skate needs, including boots, blades, and professional figure skate sharpening. The Platinum Edge is a trusted local option for skaters looking for properly fitted equipment and specialized service.

We strongly recommend working with a trained skate technician whenever possible. Proper fitting, blade mounting, and sharpening can make a major difference in comfort, performance, and skill development as a skater progresses.

Figure skaters must wear leggings or a skirt-and-tights combination with fitted, non-baggy clothing. Loose clothing can prevent coaches from clearly seeing body position and movement, and it may also create a tripping hazard on the ice. Hats and gloves are permitted.

For our youngest skaters who are just learning to skate, we recommend snow pants and a winter jacket, as early lessons often begin with crawling on the ice and practicing how to safely get up. Helmets are required for all beginners who are just getting started.

Our main season lessons take place at the Raymond Family Community Center in Williston. Pre-season and post-season skating sessions are held at the Agri Sports Complex.

Your reminder texts will always state the location of your upcoming lessons, and our master calendar will also note which rink each ice session is scheduled at.

Participation in our program is paid through a monthly enrollment fee. Families may choose to pay for the full season upfront or make convenient monthly automatic payments.

Unlike traditional figure skating programs, we work hard to keep our enrollment simple with a “one fee covers all” approach. Your monthly fee includes ice time, weekly lessons, and coaching fees.

Additional classes or program enrollments will be added to your monthly payment. Add-on private lessons are invoiced monthly.

Competition fees are separate from program tuition and are invoiced directly by the coach. The only exceptions to our all-inclusive structure are add-on lessons and special event or competition fees from the coaching team.

You will pick it up when you return! There are no make-up days for group lessons and classes.

All Oka Skating Academy students are welcomed to each ice session we have (three to four days a week) regardless if they have a scheduled lesson or not. We highly encourage skaters to use all ice sessions to practice their skills!

Our program is designed to include a minimum of three lessons per month, ensuring consistent coaching and progress. Full policy details are outlined in the member contract.

Oka Figure Skating offers Extended Season opportunities like lessons and camps.

Absolutely! All of our coaches are fully certified U.S. Figure Skating coaches, which gives them the ability to coach at events such as testing and competitions. They are also trained annually to carry out programming specifically for our members. In addition, our coaches draw from their own amateur skating backgrounds, personal testing experience, and competitive training journeys to provide knowledgeable, real-world guidance to skaters at every level.

Yes. We understand that some families choose to participate in more than one skating program. If this is something you are considering, we will have a personal conversation with your family before the season begins to discuss your skater’s goals, training needs, and how coaching responsibilities will be structured.

We will clearly establish primary and secondary coaching roles so both the skater and family understand which coach is responsible for specific areas of training and communication. There are no discounts or changes to our program structure for skaters who choose to participate in multiple programs.

In most cases, there is no need to enroll in multiple programs, as we offer comprehensive training opportunities within one program, including lessons, skill development, advanced training, testing preparation, and competition support.
